19 sites to be developed into tourism attractions
Kingstown, St. Vincent -- Feb. 1, 2008 -- The Owia Salt Pond Recreation Park project was officially launched yesterday 29th January at a ceremony held on the compound.
The project forms part of the Tourism development project jointly funded by the European Union (EU) and the government of St.Vincent and the Grenadines.
Under this project 19 tourism sites in St.Vincent and the Grenadines will be developed into major tourism attractions. The project is expected to come to an end in 2009.
According to Alistair Grell, spokesperson for the project, a few areas of the facility will be developed. He explained that refurbishment will be done to the hard court in the community, and the road leading to the recreational park will be enhanced.
The Gazebos leading to the pond will be renovated with a bathroom being added to the gazebo nearest to the pond. A bar is also expected to be placed at the Pond. Vending units, a resource centre and a children’s playground are also expected to be incorporated in the project.
Programme officer of the delegation of the European Commission Bo Hajalmefjord said Owia Salt Pond was the second project to be developed.
He said the EU had been assisting with tourism in outputs such as national park system and tourism authority.
Tourism Minister Glen Beache urged Vincentians to get on board with the development of the tourism industry by acquiring knowledge of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the product it has to offer. “We need to take pride in our history and what we have to offer,” he said.
He said upon completion of the project, the issue of fees would be looked at as maintaining the sites would be expensive. “I don’t know how it will be done, it will have to be worked out,” he said.
Parliamentary representative for the area, Montgomery Daniel said the project was welcomed in the area. He said his government would continue to bring tremendous benefits to the people of Owia. “It is up to you the people of Owia to take full advantage of the project.” He said.
The EU has donated 5 million euros while government is putting 740,000 euros towards the tourism development project.
