Book DescriptionThis all new fourth edition is the most comprehensive guidebook ever written for Maui. Hawaii resident and best-selling author, Andrew Doughty, actually hikes all the trails, rides the boats, scuba dives the reefs, dines in the restaurants, reviews all the resorts, snorkels the coastline, explores the hidden waterfalls and shares all the secrets that he finds. Everything is reviewed anonymously. This book and a rental car are all you need to discover what makes Maui so exciting.
Identifies places that are literally off the map Have traveled many times to Maui, and thought we knew all the hot spots. After thumbing through this guide, we decided to try Nakalele Blowhole on the North shore. This location is not on the map, and no signs will direct you there. One tip - unless you are into intense, no- or little-trail hiking, take the second route identified in the book. Awesome site, with little tourist traffic. We had been 200 yards from this spot before and never noticed it. This is just one example of the type of information you will get from Doughty in this book. He uses mile markers to guide you to the precise points to turn off. His descriptions are direct and objective. He also includes insights on local lore and enough history to help you appreciate the context of the sites, without bogging down the guide.

These are GREAT Books!!! This book (along with the other ones in the series focusing on the other islands) are fantastic information and highly, highly entertaining. They are insightful, funny, honest, helpful, and point you to lesser known sites and other interesting places. They give you the real rundown on what is interesting and what is not worth doing. We relied on these heavily for our trip. The maps are for the most part very helpful, he is up front about prices and quality of service, and we found the reviews of restaurants and lodging to be moderately helpful. The best features of the book are that 1) It is very informative and gives you the lowdown on the island & 2) It is highly entertaining. You will laugh. It's fun pleasure reading on its own. Best guidebooks I have seen.

Best Hawaiian guidebooks First rate guide to the Big Island. I bought their Kauai book years ago when I visited, and this one is just as good. You truly feel like your getting insider tips, and not just a project for a travel writer on assignment. Don't hesitate on this one.
Book DescriptionMost travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.
Great travel book for Oahu We purchased Hawaii Revealed last year & it went with us everywhere. When we were planning our next trip to Oahu, we ordered Oahu Revealed before we left so we could read up and decide what we wanted to do before we arrived. The information provided is accurate, and the opinions are right on.
pockets full of paper.... I suppose since most libraries stopped using the paper card system a long time ago, the only logical way to categorize these things is as an "antiquated game." However, there is still a practical use for the paper library card system--we are using it for our small office library. As far as our order was concerned, what was promised is what we got, and we appreciate your still making them available--even if you do consider it more of a toy than a practical office supply. The pockets were glued a little bit assymetrically , but they were functional, which is what matters.

Jazz Fiddle Wizard is a book/CD set tailored for string players who want to learn to improvise in the jazz tradition. The book contains practical theory lessons, presenting rhythms and scales that are immediately put to use. Concepts are introduced progressively, requiring comprehension of previously introduced techniques and terminology. Each lesson includes a theory section and an exercise or performance section. The companion CD provides a full rhythm section accompaniment for each exercise and tune. It is assumed that the reader/player has a basic technical command of the instrument and reads standard music notation at an elementary level or higher. Jazz Fiddle Wizard works in conjunction with the www.jazzfiddlewizard.com website, offering a unique interactive experience in which the reader is invited to pose questions directly to the author. This method has been field-tested on college students and other players at different level of technical proficiency and various backgrounds. Bottom line - IT WORKS!
Full set of lessons teaching improvisation techniques. A very good practical tutorial for teaching improvisation. The book builds up your improvisational skills, each lesson incorporating the skill learned in the previous lesson. Each lesson includes detailed instructions for developing your technique, this book is certainly a good find.
I have found the lessons hard work, so you must be prepared to put in a lot of practice. The book is also not explicit in all details and you are required to use a bit of imagination and common sense when just being told to 'improvise'.
I feel a bit of background information about the different techniques being introduced would be interesting. Early on 'bebop scales' are introduced but there is little explanation of where and how these originated. Clearly early swing jazz fiddlers such Stephane Grappelli and Joe Venuti would not have used bebop techniques since the bebop era followed the swing era, but there is no mention of any of this.
You should also be prepared to invest in a Stuff Smith CD, since some lessons refer to his work and it seems to me it is important to listen to some of his solos. No example solo's are included on the CD, the CD contains backing tracks.
This book is packed with lessons and I have not seen anything else quite like it for teaching jazz fiddle.
Hawaii is a land of dreams and nowhere is this more beautifully evoked than in Hawaii Dreamscapes Revealed - Big Island. There are two types of travel books. The first has interesting photos, but writing which either detracts, or does not add to the experience. The second has competent writing, but photos you've seen a million times.
This book is neither.
"Hawaii Dreamscapes Revealed" is in a category all of its own.
From the renowned author, Andrew Doughty, along with his photographer, Leona Boyd, "Hawaii Dreamscapes Revealed" has ushered in an entirely new genre of travel books with this articulate and intelligent photo series.
This is one of the most exquisite books I've ever read.
Clearly, the writer and photographers of "Hawaii Dreamscapes Revealed" have found the beautiful and the savage, the profound and the simple, the dream and the reality. And even more amazingly, they share their extensive knowledge with their readers. Open this book toany page and you'll be astounded at the authors' breathtaking slant on one of the most incredible places in the world.
Yet this is not your typical book of pretty photographs of palm trees in Hawaii. Truly, I've never seen anything like this. Their renderings of snow clouds beneath your feet, wild goats, beaches glittering with gems, jungle flowers, hellish fumes, driftwood, and mountains leave the reader wondering, "Where on earth is this place?"
How in the world could one place contain all of this? Who knew that Hawaii has ten of the world's fifteen climatic zones? I hope to travel to Hawaii someday, and will now do so in an entirely different way.
Check out pages 100-101 for a simply astonishing photo. Enter this dreamscape revealed, and perhaps you'll learn as much about yourself, as you do this amazing place.
"Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not."- Ralph Waldo Emerson
These two authors carry it with them. Travel with this pair as they let you glimpse the color of Hawaii's soul.
Open-ended, interactive experiences provide a vital link between creating and understanding educational concepts. Children are challenged to embellish their posters, adding their own creative touches that can include photographs, magazine cutouts, and their own doodles. A fun way to help children expand their understanding of themselves and the world!
