Adventure is 24-year old North Carolina native and Baltimore transplant, Benny Boeldt. His ultra-melodic synth compositions pull from his earliest exposure to the 8-bit soundtracks of the Sega Genesis video game catalog, but this isn't just retro video game music. Mix in the kitschy Moogy sound of Hot Butter's "Popcorn", the saturated disco-theatrics of late 70s electro-pop acts like Sparks and Yellow Magic Orchestra, and a penchant for Eastern European diminished scales, and you've come close to Adventure's accelerated, baroque sound. An advanced, dance floor friendly take on the music of early video gaming.
Album DescriptionRemastered digipak reissue for the band's 2nd album originally released in 1978, includes 3 bonus tracks 'Adventure' (previously unissued), 'Ain't That Nothin' (single version) & 'Glory' (early version). Elektra. 2003.
Television: Adventure As a casual fan, this is my favorite Television record. Marquee Moon is good, but this is just better in my opinion.
"Foxhole" is a leftover from the MM sessions, and it definitely sounds like it. It's totally out of place, and consequently is my least favorite song on the album. (If it had been on MM, it would have fit right in, and I probably would have loved it). Other than that, this album has a terrific flow to it, and is great for a laidback listening experience. Television is known as a guitar band, but that amazing and heartwrending piano from the MM song "Guiding Light" is back, in spades, on Adventure. With songs like "Days," "Careful" and "Carried Away," Adventure could have been titled: NYC Punks Discover Country & Western. Then subtitled: And Make Some Damn Good Music As A Result. The only skip-worthy song on the whole album is the weak 6-minute instrumental, "The Dream's Dream," which just meanders and goes nowhere. The bottom line though, for me, is that Adventure surpasses any of either Verlaine's or Lloyd's solo work--making it as the logical next step if you have heard MM and you want something more.
And yes, the awesome red cover helps a little bit too.
tropicalports:Pete and Pete took an alternative rock approach to the family sitcom. In other words, this wasn't your dad's situation comedy. Is it any wonder so many alternative musicians, like Juliana Hatfield, the B-52’s Kate Pierson, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, and Blondie’s Debbie Harry flocked to the (fictional) town of Wellsville? Nor could independent film actors, like Richard Edson (Stranger Than Paradise), Martin Donovan (Saved!), and Steve Buscemi (Fargo), resist the allure of the appealingly offbeat Wrigley family.
Meet the Wrigleys: redheaded teenager Pete (Michael Maronna, Home Alone), redheaded elementary school student Pete (Danny Tamberelli, The Mighty Ducks) and his tattoo Petunia, Dad (Hardy Rawls), Mom (Judy Grafe)--and the metal plate in her head. First season cast members include Big Pete's almost-girlfriend Ellen (Alison Fanelli), Little Pete’s pal Natasha (Heather Matarazzo, Welcome to the Dollhouse), bus driver Stu (Damian Young), and Little Pete's personal superhero, Artie (Toby Huss), the strongest man in the world. Buscemi appears as Ellen’s dad in "Apocalypse Pete" and would return for another episode in the second season.
The first season followed three years of 60-second shorts. It features 12 adventures (eight regular episodes plus four specials). Highlights include "King of the Road," in which the Wrigleys battle for road trip supremacy, "Tool and Die," in which Big Pete learns not to judge a shop teacher by his cover, and "Hard Day's Pete," in which Little Pete forms the Blowholes with Syd Straw and Marshall Crenshaw. Then there's "Don't Tread on Pete," in which Little Pete utters the immortal line, "Is this guy pickin' your scabs the way he's pickin' my scabs?" The Adventures of Pete and Pete ran on Nickelodeon for three well-loved, much-missed seasons. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
English EXCELLENT Thank you so much! I loved this show when I was younger and now that I have a copy of the first season, life is a little bit more enjoyable, haha. Great condition.
tropicalports:A new neighbor joins the redheaded brothers for their second season on Nickelodeon. The accident-prone Nona Mecklenberg (Michelle Trachtenberg) makes her first appearance in the premiere ("Grounded for Life"), where she is introduced as "the loneliest girl in Wellsville." By the end of the episode, that's no longer true as she and Little Pete (Danny Tamberelli) have become fast friends. Alas, nobody can take the place of his pet lizard, Gary, who makes his debut--and swan song--in the following adventure ("The Big Quiet'). Mona's dad, James (Iggy Pop, looking sharp in cardigan and khakis), will join the cast just in time for "Halloweenie," in which Pumpkin Eaters terrorize the neighborhood.
As for Big Pete (Michael Maronna), he'll finally ask Ellen (Alison Fanelli) out in "Time Tunnel". Endless Mike (Rick Gomez), in a rare moment of kindness, will lend him his car. It won't really change things, however. Maybe some people are meant to be friends--and others to be enemies. Then there are the Wrigley parents. In the first season, Dad (Hardy Rawls) fought for road trip supremacy. Now it's about having the best lawn and catching Bob, the biggest fish in the lake. Metal plate aside, Mom (Judy Grafe) does what she can to keep the craziness in check.
As before, Big Pete narrates in that delightful deadpan, and many old favorites are back: bus driver Stu (Damian Young), math teacher Miss Fingerwood (Syd Straw), Ellen's dad, Mr. Hickle (Steve Buscemi), and strongman Artie (Toby Huss). Little Pete’s personal superhero will make his final appearance in the two-part "Farewell, My Little Viking." Guest stars include Gordon Gano as substitute teacher Zank ("X=Why?"), Bebe Neuwirth as McGinty the mailcarrier, David Johansen as park ranger Thorsen("On Golden Pete"), and Chris Elliot as psychic meter man Ray ("Sick Day"). --Kathleen C. English yeah...not that happy. I had ordered this product in the middle of Sept. to give to a friend of mine for their birthday. Not only did the gift not arrive on time, but it is now almost November and i have yet to receive said package. I still can't find a way to contact Amazon and im pretty friggin pissed. My last resort is to construct a giant spotlight of Artie's face and maybe the strongest man...in the world! will come to my aid. :(
tropicalports:Barney and his pals take a trip to Grandpa's farm and find that a magical egg--which is due to hatch any moment--is missing. As opposed to the studio-bound television show, this feature film has alot more visual diversity and is a bright, good-looking production. Barney fans will appreciate the broader production scale--even if they don't realize it. --Tom Keogh
English Surprisingly Good We got this DVD as a hand-me-down from my child's older cousin. I really didn't expect a Barney movie to be at all watchable, but it is. My 2 year old absolutely loves this, so I've seen it repeatedly and don't suffer. It is a cute story with a decent children's plotline and is visually appealing. The young actors are good and quite likeable. It's not as enjoyable as any of the recent Disney or Pixar productions (which have a lot of comic turns for adults as well), but for small children it has everything; a touch of magic, adventure, comedy, warmth, and lively musical numbers. Adults won't love it, but your little ones will! Another asset that's important to me is that there are no real scary moments. My 2 year old is not ready for scares, and that's why he doesn't watch *my* favorite kid's movies yet (toy story, monsters inc, etc.), and he won't be able to enjoy those for a couple of years at least. This movie is exactly what I look for for him right now.

tropicalports:Grab your crunchy, munchy honey cakes: it's time for a feature-length movie from Australia's fab four, the Wiggles! Released Down Under in 1997 as The Wiggles Movie, this charming show gives fans a wholesome, 70-minute fix from the singing group's pre-Disney Channel years. Today is Dorothy the Dinosaur's birthday, and the Wiggles can't wait to surprise her. Alas, sweet selfless Dorothy thinks they have forgotten. As the four tuneful Aussies bop from Henry's kaleidoscopic underwater pad to Wags the Dog's house and beyond, Dorothy keeps busy by teaching a struggling magician how to believe in himself. Throughout the story, 16 song-and-dance numbers easily mesh with the plot. Lightweight action swirls to a happy ending as magician Wally the Great lives up to his name and Dorothy's party restores her faith in friendship. While 3- to 8-year-olds should enjoy the whole show, wiggly toddlers might lose track. --Liane Thomas
English Some love it, some don't My son loves this movie, in fact, we've had to buy it twice because the first copy got scratched and he wanted to watch "Wally"! My son watches it over and over...it has it's corny moments but what Wiggles show doesn't? My favorite part is when they go down Breezy Street (or something like that) and come out frozen - Murray looks so funny! I also like when they are wondering what Jeff is dreaming about, turns out he's dreaming about being a cow! I laughed out loud the first time I saw that part. I give it 4 stars only because my niece hates it...I think Wally bothers her.
